We’ve talked about first dates multiple times here on TipsyWriter. And why? Because no matter how hard we prepare, there are always lingering nerves. What if we mess up? What if we say the wrong things? What if they hate us?
And while these things are likely unrealistic concerns, they’re concerns that most people have when approaching a new romantic interest. We are told over and over throughout our lives that first impressions are crucial – they’re the first glimpse into who you are that someone receives, so it’s of the utmost importance that you make the most of that one opportunity.
No pressure or anything.
Make sure that you are taking all the right steps to ensure you have a perfect first date with these simple (and obvious!) first date tips:
- Show up when and where you say you will
There’s lots a ways to make a bad first impression, but not actually being there to make it at all is a way to ensure that things will get off on the wrong foot. It’s better to be early and awkward than late.
- Have a few conversation topics prepared
When people fear social interactions (whether before a date or just in general), usually what they are afraid of is feeling uncomfortable. Make sure that you aren’t the cause of any awkward silences by making sure you have at least a few things you’re prepared to talk about.
- Stay away from touchy subjects
First dates are more about determining whether there’s any chemistry between the two of you – not for analyzing the intimate details of one another’s lives. Leave any uncomfortable topics at home and aim to keep things light and fun for your first time together.
- Pay attention to your date
Chances are, if your date is having a good time, you’ll be able to tell based on their body language. On the other hand, if they’re looking for a way to cut the night short, that’s generally an easy thing to tell as well. Pay attention to the non-verbal cues so that you can appropriately respond to them without making anyone too terribly uncomfortable.
- Show your appreciation
Whether you think a second date is in the cards or not, make sure that you show appreciation to your date for their time. Thank them for meeting up with you and end the date on a positive note. Even if you never see each other again, leaving with a smile says a lot about you and your respect for others.
